In 2010, the North West based HIV charity, George House Trust (GHT), received £27,500 from Manchester Pride to support their Welfare Fund, a fund to support HIV positive people through financial hardship.

What is the GHT Welfare Fund?

The fund provides a payment to anyone living in the North West who is HIV positive and in financial hardship. The purpose of this fund is to contribute towards improving the quality of life of the person requesting the payment. This might be for basic requirements such as food and electricity. Other payments might be for an essential item such as white goods or bedding.

Lynda Shentall, Director of Services at George House Trust, explains further:

"The money from the welfare fund is given to HIV positive people to help them with the very basics of day to day living , that is food, electricity and so on. We also make payments for larger items such as help with bills or white goods. In 2008 /9 we made payments to 699 different individuals from the fund

George House Trust values enormously the financial support that it receives from Manchester Pride. All of the money we receive goes into our welfare fund and is, in turn, given directly to people living with HIV across the North West of England. The fund is an essential part of George House Trust and without the money from Manchester Pride, we would not be able to deliver this important service which alleviates real hardship for people living with HIV across the North West of England."
