When did you first volunteer for Manchester Pride?

I first volunteered in 2010 and loved it. I would recommend it.

What type of volunteering have you done previously?

Not nearly enough previously to this. I've volunteered at a couple of social events - but that's it really. I wish I had have done it sooner though, as it definitely cleanses the soul.

Your best experience whilst volunteering for Manchester Pride?

The buzz, tension and excitement building up to a crescendo at the beginning of 2010 parade. The paparazzi were swarming, the crowd were waiting anxiously, Sir Ian Mckellan was poised with his rainbow flag and the Corrie cast were in full swing. Amazing feeling – just before the parade began – sent shivers down my spine (in a good way!) Also, watching the muscle men getting ready on the Federation float prior to the parade.

How did you hear about Manchester Pride?

How could you not hear about Manchester Pride? One of the largest, most colourful, fabulous events of the year! TV, radio, magazines, posters, t-shirts, events, mugs, badges, whistles – they’re well loved and well publisised!

How has volunteering benefited your personal development?

Last year I personally felt it was about time I volunteered for a worthy cause and I’m so glad I chose Manchester Pride. It definitely gives you that warm glowy feeling. You are contributing to the community, giving a helping hand, adding to the wonderful atmosphere and having a jolly good time whilst doing it. You meet such an array of people from every walk of life and make new friends along the way. It also gives you a different perspective of Manchester Pride - you see just how much goes on behind the scenes and how passionate the organisers are about raising funds and awareness for so many different causes.

How has volunteering benefited your professional development?

The parade marshal role is very much a "people-person" orientated position. It helps develop your communication and organisational skills. You get put into situations where you need to think on your feet, make considered choices and act on them straight away. It also takes you out of the mundane office space for a while, which helps give you a different perspective of how other people perceive you – which can be advantageous when you got back to your full time job.

Would you recommend volunteering for Manchester Pridee?

Absolutely! If you’ve got a spare half day or even a couple of hours, every bit helps. You get to meet some great people and you discover a new found respect for the Manchester Pride event. Also, you can usually choose what you want to volunteer for. So if you want to be part of the parade, do some admin or help with organising a part of the Big Weekend, then you have that freedom of choice. Also, apparently you are guaranteed to go to heaven if you volunteer for MCR Pride... it's true!

Best Pride moment?

I was delighted to be a part of the amazing Pride parade going through the city centre. Such a huge buzz being a part of it!
