What has been your fondest memory from volunteering at Manchester Pride?
This is my third year as a volunteer for Manchester Pride. The weekend is brilliant but it’s the parade every single time that gives me the biggest thrill. I just love the buzz before you set off walking along side the floats, people in the parade camping it up, the wicked reaction of everyone who come out to watch and the fun banter on route.
What would you say to anyone thinking of volunteering at Manchester Pride for the first time?
Oh yes, got for it! When you put the Pride t-shirt on you feel very proud to be a part of the event. It’s a great way to give back to the LGBT community, people love to come and talk to you because you’re apart of the team and it’s lots of fun. It’s also a good way to meet people from all over the UK who travel to Manchester to help.
Are you looking forward to Manchester Pride’s 21st birthday this summer?
I can't wait for the 21st Pride and being involved in making it the best – it’s going to be fantastic! I'm pleased to say that Jackie (festival director) has asked me to be more involved with the volunteer’s team and to help with the Women's Stage this year, so yes, I’m very much looking forward to the 21st birthday bash.
As an ‘out and proud’ member of the gay community what advice would you give to anyone thinking of coming out for this first time?
Coming out can be so hard for some people but please tell the ones you love - you will be proud of yourself and feel happier deep within. Be honest and true to yourself - that is all people can ask of you, plus you will feel so good about yourself. Whether you’re young or old it’s important to be yourself completely. Some people do get a negative reaction but hang in there because you are loved. Please don't be unhappy and bottle it up, show people you are proud to be gay and proud of who you fall in love with - it’s your life to live!!
And finally, apart from volunteering for Manchester Pride, what else have been up to?
Well my passion is concerts. I also love to go back to Gran Canaria for Pride. This year is special as it’s the 10th Gay Pride, so bring on May. To everyone about to Volunteer or attend Manchester 21st Gay Pride, have a wicked weekend!!! (Come Say Hiya)
