I am delighted to be able to offer my support to Manchester Pride.
I am proud of this Government’s record on strengthening rights for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual people- from repealing section 28 to protections from discrimination in the workplace, to the introduction of civil partnerships and, most recently, protections from discrimination in the provision of goods, facilities and services.
We have already made these great strides towards securing a more just and progressive society for everyone. But there is more to do.
We must end homophobic bullying in schools and fight prejudice from the very earliest of ages, recognising the deep scars that such treatment leaves on children.
We will simplify discrimination law to make it more effective in protecting people, preventing discrimination before it happens and promoting equality. And we will continue to work to remove any prejudice that lesbian, gay and bisexual people face.
Legislation is the first step, but guaranteeing that our society benefits fully from the skills of all its citizens is the ultimate goal.
It is events like this that are the key to bringing about the cultural change necessary to stamp out prejudice in our society. Manchester Pride is a real example of how we can drive forward the Equality agenda by working and campaigning together.
We will continue to champion social justice and equality, pursuing what we all want to see - a tolerant, fair, inclusive society which gives all citizens the best possible life chances.
So, congratulations and best wishes for Manchester Pride 2008 – I wish it every success.
