Pride Events and Exhibitions

Manchester Pride 2008 saw a great programme of art, culture, heritage, film and music events take place over the ten day festival.

The Military Pride exhibition at the Imperial War Museum North collected and interpretted people's experiences of modern war and wartime life in Britain and the Commonwealth whilst My First Pride at URBIS reflected on 18 years of LGBT celebrations in Manchester with an exhibition of memories and memorabilia from Mardi Gras, the Ab Fab weekend, Gayfest, Europride and Manchester Pride.

Gaydio hit the airwaves again for August 2008 and Cornerhouse played host to the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival On Tour with showings of Finn's Girl, Breakfast With Scott, She's a Boy I Knew and Otto; or Up With Dead People. BBC Manchester explored the role of music in the struggles for equality around the world with a series of lunchtime Pride Chamber Music concerts and a farcical guide of 'how not to get laid' was explored in The Speed of Dating at Taurus.

The Lost Dresses of Travilla at The Palace Hotel brought together a collection including original pieces from Marilyn Monroe in celebration of one of the most influential costume designers in history whilst Manchester Pride went for the doggy-loving vote with the Pink Dog Show and Pride Pooch competition.

A wide range of other events explored the diversity of our community over the festival including jazz and dance workshops at Cross Street Chapel in All That Jazz; Pre Pride Detox for the Mind at Taurus explored self-development, empowerment and attitude versus aptitude for women; Manchester Adoption Society held an informational coffee morning; Manchester Community Church held a special service to kick off Pride; the LGF held Thanks for the Mammaries, raising awareness of breast cancer amongst lesbians and the Out in the Past Heritage Trail guided visitors through 200 years of LGBT history in Manchester.
